The energy in the room focused on how to help people living with mental illness. NAMI Pasco’s 2013 Autumn Gala, held October 12 at the Verizon Event Center in New Port Richey, was a catered affair with music, awards, and MC Eric Waxler, ABC Action News Reporter.
The event coincided with Mental Illness Awareness Week and featured a compelling presentation by mental health advocate and author, Peter Earley. Former Washington Post reporter, Early wrote “CRAZY: A Father’s Search through America’s Mental Health Madness.” It was when Earley’s own son, in the throes of a manic episode, entered a neighbor’s house illegally that the author learned what happens to mentally ill people who break the law.
Members of the NAMI Pasco Board of Directors who worked to draw attention and raise funds to support people in our own community living with brain disorders include (in alphabetical order): Loreta Cavicchi, Larry Engles, Pat Scimone-Almascy, Maryann Senderling, Gloria Strother, and Nancy Whitener.
